Discordant Star

A Discordant Star (忌曜) is a planet in high friction with the chart's ruling star — one whose relationship to the self is abrasive and hard to get along with. It is the unfavourable pole of the like/dislike (喜忌) layer.

As with its counterpart, the term names a relationship, not an absolute nature. In the friction framework, a Discordant Star is one where friction with the self runs high — but this is not absolute misfortune. High friction resists rigidity and can, in the right life-period, be exactly what breaks a stuck pattern; a discordant relationship in one context may be re-priced as help in another.

The principle throughout is: "it is not that a star is good or bad, but that a relationship is harmonious or in friction."
